Beijing-Based Filipino Group KnK Holds Fundraiser for Taal Volcano Eruption Victims

Beijing-based Filipino community group Kusina ni Kabayan (KnK) is holding a fundraiser for the people affected by the ongoing eruption of Taal Volcano in the Philippines.

Philippine disaster management authorities said more than 40,000 people from several provinces that surround Taal are now staying at temporary evacuation centers, more than 3 days after it suddenly spewed volcanic ash into the air. The ash buried villages close to the volcano crater and reached the capital of Manila and other northern provinces on Luzon island. Authorities have also reported more than 300 volcanic earthquakes, which have caused numerous fissures in towns near Taal.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level 4 — the second-highest on a scale of 5 — indicating that an “explosive eruption” could happen within hours or days. The institute has also urged a total evacuation of more than 930,000 people residing within the 17-kilometer-radius danger zone around the volcano.

KnK Founder Perlita Pengson said 80 percent of the proceeds from the sale of 200 copies of the Kain na, Kabayan cookbook will be used to purchase drinking water, medicine, and sanitary materials urgently needed by evacuees. The remaining 20 percent of the proceeds will go to the elementary school beneficiary of the charity project.

The cookbook costs RMB 80 (PHP 500), and the delivery fee in China will be waived by KnK for group orders exceeding three copies. People who will buy up to two copies will have to pay for the delivery fee.

For people who wish to buy the cookbook or make monetary donations, please add Pengson on WeChat (ID: PerlitaPengson1) or email KnK at kusinanikabayan@gmail.com. Upon adding Pengson, please send the following information for cookbook delivery purposes:
– Name of buyer
– Contact number
– Address in English and Chinese.

If you are based in the Philippines and would like to purchase a cookbook or send in-kind donations, please contact KnK volunteer Gil Librado at +63 955 540 9572. He will coordinate the delivery of KnK donations with a Las Pinas City-based church, which organizes a relief operation for evacuees in several towns in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite.
